About
Black Diary 1887 is a free city tour app that connects users to Black history through the people, places, and stories that shaped their cities. Through the app and its growing community, Black Diary 1887 highlights overlooked moments in Black history and invites students to help tell these stories with care and curiosity.
The Black Diary 1887 Social Media and Essay Contest recognizes students who demonstrate insight, evidence, creativity, and clarity. Entries are evaluated using a rubric that also considers social media engagement. Throughout the contest, Judges’ Daily Social Media Picks will feature standout social media posts. At the conclusion of the competition, Grand Prize Social Media Winners and all Essay Contest Winners will be selected.
The contest is free and open to current high school students in the 12 cities listed below. Through this initiative, Black Diary 1887 seeks to elevate student scholarship, encourage responsible digital storytelling, and foster critical dialogue.

Eligibility
- Age: 14–19 years old
- Grade: 9–12
- Enrollment in a recognized educational program, including public, private, religious, charter, or home-school programs
- Residency in one of the following cities: Atlanta, GA; Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Memphis, TN; Miami, FL; New York, NY; Oakland, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Shreveport, LA; and Washington, DC
Contest Period
The contest runs from February 15, 2026 through March 5, 2026, ending at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
Students are encouraged to use AI to create their social media posts and essays.
To enter, participants must create a social media post identifying a notable Black person (living or deceased) or a place with significance to Black culture in their city that should be featured on @BlackDiary1887, the free tour app highlighting Black culture, enterprise, and legacy.
Participants may also choose to enter the Essay Contest by submitting a 250 – 350 word essay.
